Weekly Tip: Update Firefox’s Google Search Icon on a Mac

I just noticed today that Firefox 3 on Mac OS X was still using the familiar but ancient Google favicon in the searchbar. I, of course, Googled for a guide to updating this. I went with the first one that I found, but unfortunately it was only for Windows. It was easy to figure it out for Mac however, so I’m saving you about five minutes with this simple guide!

  1. Download the new Google Search plugin here (right-click, Save Link As…)
  2. Quit Firefox
  3. Navigate to Firefox.app, right click, and select “Show Package Contents…”
  4. Head to: Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/searchplugins/
  5. Replace the old google.xml with the new one
  6. Relaunch Firefox. Enjoy!
