I decided to start a new weekly column-ette (if you will). Just quick, short technological tips to make your life easier.
So, I decided my first weekly tip is going to be to use OpenDNS!
Before I explain WHY you should use OpenDNS, let me explain what DNS is. DNS is the basic backbone of the internet. DNS servers are the servers that convert domain names (like www.johnmairs.com) to IP addresses (like 64.22.66.40). The IP address is the actual numerical location of the server, and this is how communication actually takes place.
Now, WHY is it better to use OpenDNS in lieu of your ISP’s DNS servers? One reason is that OpenDNS updates their servers more frequently than most ISPs. DNS servers have to be updated to account for new domain names. Newly registered domain names don’t actually work until the DNS servers around the world update and pick it up. OpenDNS updates frequently, so you will always have access to the newest websites. That’s why I switched, but OpenDNS also provides other wonderful features. Probably the most useful is typo correction — say I type www.johnmairs.cmo instead of .com. OpenDNS will automatically correct this typo and send you on your way to the website you intended. It can also track your most frequently visited sites, block adult content, and helps protect you from phishing websites (phony bank logins, etc). Overall, OpenDNS provides you with a safe, fast, and fun internet experience. There’s no reason to not use it.
